Senate of the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University

{ S. Bill. 24-25, 02}

An SGA Funding Bill

Act to Fund THE SGA FALL RETREAT event

Introduced by: Chair Tim Huang of the XXX Considered this the day of August 24th in the year 2024

Sponsored by: Senators Daarian Rouhani and Nasreen Naqvi XXX

SECTION 1. TITLE. This Act may be referred to as the “SGA Fall Retreat Funding Bill”

SECTION 2. DEFINITIONS.

  1. SGA — The term “SGA” shall refer to the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University.
  2. JHU, Hopkins - The terms “JHU” and “Hopkins” shall refer to the Johns Hopkins University.
  3. Weber’s Farm is a local farm located at 2526 Proctor Ln, Parkville, MD 21234.

SECTION 3. FINDINGS AND PURPOSES.

  1. FINDINGS & PURPOSES (explain why funding is needed, what the event is for, and what content and sponsorship is desired -- open to all? Celebrating event? Etc. )
  2. Typically, a Retreat is planned every semester and is part of the Chair of Programming’s main jobs. While there was not a fall retreat last year, with the newly elected senate and executive board, the Fall retreat stands as an important time to create bonds with senators, start initiatives, and introduce the basics of Student Government in a more formal setting.
  3. Typically, the Retreats have been set primarily on staying on campus and doing various leadership workshops. However, the new executive board wants to bring a new energy into the atmosphere of SGA, and as such, the idea of splitting the Fall Retreat into two main sections - first, a traditional retreat with leadership activities and a general SGA overview, and the second part is acting as a more fun ‘community-building’ retreat to Weber’s Farms.
  4. The main cost for this event will be the lunch catering, which will be from Ekiben, and the tickets/transportation costs for Weber Farms. The estimated cost of Ekiben, based on last year’s catering costs, is around $900.
  5. Meanwhile, the transportation costs for a full ride to Weber’s Farms for around 3 hours is $250, and the estimated ticket costs at a rate of $20 per person AT MOST for 60 members is $1200. The ticket cost accounts for various barn rides and attractions, and does not include costs of bakery goods. The ticket cost is optional, though includes pumpkin picking, corn mazes, barn rides, and other activities.
  6. Including all food and vendor costs, the full event amount of $2350. As this cost is rather high, we are making the Weber’s Farm optional, with a charge ticket cost of $10 per person. This will reduce costs to around $2000, which is much more manageable.
  7. NOTE: Weber’s Farms has not officially put out ticket prices. Ticket prices can go as low as $6, but as high as $20. Generally, ticket prices are around $14, so we are using the greatest estimation of costs. This total event cost may be reduced based on how many people attend, and how many tickets are bought.
