Questions to plant (from the perspective of a trustee)
- What specific things can the Student Life committee do to help facilitate communication?
- As we work towards our One University goal, we want to facilitate cross-campus collaboration. Are there financial, structural, or other barriers in boosting cross-campus engagement?
- Programming? Programming councils, HOP, other campus programming
- Collaborative programming
- Limited programming funds -
- Cross-divisional funding
- Given that there is great potential for collaboration … how can we do this?
- We have a different time scale
- How can we help in a one-year or two year time scale
- Civic engagement question
- “AS you all know, something that is very important to the BoT is student engagement in voting. How have students engaged, and how can we (the BoT) continue to support civic engagement amont the studnet body”
- More connection with SAIS - so exciting. New gov. Great opp. More student involved.
- Working towards events etc
- Events to get students involved?
- Plan local, state, and federal trips to begin engaging more students
- Some funding comes from state
- Events to get students involved?
- What do they envision
- Something about financial incentives. Mention SNF agora, advocating, Ten for one.
- We acknowl.. Working with advisors a.. Annapolis and Johns Hopkins Day. Wondering .. “One University” goal In the past year,
Three initiatives shown in the presentation
- Communication
- MSE closure and detailed lack of communication from Student Affairs despite frequent inquests
- Survey
- HSC delay and detailed lack of communication from Student Affairs despite frequent inquests
- SGA members are not tapped to serve on University-wide search committees/bodies despite greatest knowledge of student experience and interaction with other 9 divisions (including APL)
- Provost Search Committee
- Inaugural Dean of Governance Search Committee
- Sheridan Dean of Libraries Search Committee
- The Board of Trustees and SGA work on similar things but since the BoT does not share their agenda items with SGA, we cannot coordinate efforts
- MSE closure and detailed lack of communication from Student Affairs despite frequent inquests
- Religious and Spiritual Advocacy
- The events of Fall 2023 showed a sustained need for support of religious and spiritual students, faculty, and staff at JHU
- The closure of MSE Library will also close the library prayer room, necessitating a larger central campus space to be set aside in the interim
- Against a backdrop of incivility and division on other college campuses, SGA found a degree of unity on campus and showed that JHU can act as a starting place for these discussions ->
- Civic and Dialogue Engagement
- SGA is trying to bring back the President’s Day of Service in a form that benefits longer-term service relationships and brings Baltimore into Hopkins
- Coordination with Student Affairs, ODI, and SNF Agora on Dialogue Events
- Capital Day and (the big ask) Board of Trustees/Provost support for SGA to visit DC and engage in congressional/presidential advocacy during Fall 2024 on behalf of college students

Programming
- Flamingo Event
- In partnership with Student Affairs, SGA reimagined a campus tradition of having flamingo yard-props appear on quads by placing hundreds of flamingo plushies on the quad which students could take home. This was widely photographed and posted on social media.
- Barbie at the Beach
- In continuing the tradition of having movie/show-themed events, the 2025 Class Programming Council hosted an event on the Beach following the Barbie movie. This tradition was established two years prior by the 2025 Class Council when they hosted Jay Games, an on-the-quad version of Squid Games.
