3. Report from Charles
- There will be a meeting with Dr. Brown and board of trustees on October 7th. SGA will have 10 minutes to present. There will be more meetings with trustees in November.
- Administration transparency work will be more focusing on how SGA can help administration get their words out. Thus SGA can be the voice for them.
- The SGA will not be asking for door to door blue jay vans service.
- Construction work will continue as SGA’s initiative last year made improvements.
- Two vice deans were recommended to be invited to the executive meeting first before GBM.
- Srigouri suggested inviting Tarini as it is her committee work.
- Vishnu asked about how KSAS students cannot overload the class credits but whiting students can. Tarini was suggesting that research credits should be disregarded from the overall credits as it does not add to class work period.
4. Initiative discussion
- Srigouri suggested creating a stream line between the administration and SGA so the Social media announcement and communication would be more efficient. That way we can eradicate the emailing and approval process and make the communication process simple. Charles told that the word from the bird has graphic information but students are not aware of that. Srigouri said that the idea of “beautifying the fencing” could be brainstormed. Charles said if we can bring students art work that would be great. Srigouri suggested providing some templates for the departments who do not directly work with students give us information they want SGA to communicate with the student body.
- Last year’s senator created a template opportunity SGA budgeting.
- Tyler addressed the communication issues between programming and a senator on social media posts. One senator was speaking with Dr. Brown and Britney without informing the executive branch or SGA advisors. Charles addressed that anything we email to the admission, they must go through Charles since any initiatives SGA does is ultimately handled by the advisors. During the LEED training, the senator gained access to SGA instagram which should not be happening.
- The fundamental issue was that the senator missing initiative guideline presentation given by VP Omotara, due to his class overlapping with GBM.
- Charles suggested that the executive board should present an expectation for SGA. He also suggested readdressing the purpose for each committee during the next GBM.
- Omotara suggested creating a measurable form of progress with senators working on initiatives. The executive can encourage senators to at least attempt on one initiative.
- Srigouri addressed the mannerism during administrative GBM must be improved based on last year’s experience.
- Srigouri suggested presenting examples of past SGA initiatives. Next GBM will be SGA expectation, presenting theme for the year, and readdressing committee objectives.
- Srigouri is considering attending a couple of committee meetings to oversee what they are working on.
- Omotara suggested having an initiative tracker for senators.
- Omotara suggested hosting an Executive board sponsored space where students can walk in and speak about their experience at Hopkins. Not only do we ask about negative aspects, but we should ask about positive feedback. Jackson from 2 years ago was very helpful with opening up space for students.
- Omotara suggested utilizing an app for students to anonymously voice their ideas or questions they have.
- Charles highlighted any resolution going through Charles must be aimed to facilitate productive conversations and positive communication with the administration, rather than filling it with frustration.
- Omotara suggested leveraging the question app so that the executive board can pre-select questions which are respectful and well thought out. If questions were submitted anonymously the Executive board will ask the question in the AGBM.
- Vishnu asked if the meeting with Dr. Brown will be involving President Daniel. Charles answered he won’t be there but is working on having meetings with him and executive board.
- Vishnu also asked how the social media posts must be handled regarding school statements and student organization’s statements instead of emailing the administration. Charles answered SGA continues to be neutral regarding the statement as we shall not take any side.
- Imad announced the budget should be decided by the end of this month.
- Omotara asked if we are supposed to restrict class council senators to only work on class related initiatives. Vishnu answered if the initiative indirectly impact the school productivity that should be passed by the executive board with the approval from the advisors.
- Charles and Dr. Brown received many emails every day due to various changes happening this year, thus he recommended SGA members to follow up with them after 3 days and be understanding of this.
- Srigouri went over what we will be presenting during the cohort time including SGA expectation, past example initiatives, urgent initiatives, this year’s theme, and committee objectives.
- Srigouri suggested coffee chat space for the student feedback event.
- Vishnu updated on SGA Communication chair.
