An SGA cosponsorship Funding Bill
Act to Fund event
Introduced by: Senator ???? of the XXX Considered this the day of XXX in the year 2024
Sponsored by: Srigouri Oruganty and Karen Meritxell Velazquez Luna
SECTION 1. TITLE. This Act may be referred to as the “SARU Funding Bill”
SECTION 2. DEFINITIONS.
- SGA — The term “SGA” shall refer to the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University.
- JHU, Hopkins - The terms “JHU” and “Hopkins” shall refer to the Johns Hopkins University.
- SARU - The term “SARU” shall refer to Sexual Assault Resources Unit, a club at Johns Hopkins University
SECTION 3. FINDINGS AND PURPOSES.
- We are asking for $700 in reimbursement in order for our club to be able to afford Lexie Bean’s speaker fee along with snacks and drinks for the event, and their bus fare coverage. Lexie Bean is a queer and trans survivor of domestic violence and sexual abuse who works to raise awareness about sexual violence within this population, as well as conduct workshops on healing for survivors and on supporting survivors. They are also an author and filmmaker and have released works on these topics. For our open-student event, Lexie Bean will be speaking about the rise of anti-trans legislation and sexual assault in the wake of 2024 elections. Specifically, they will discuss how to best support survivors and specific tools for support, and what comes with a time where there may be a lot of uncertainty for survivors, especially trans and queer survivors. Additionally, they will be discussing ways to practice self-preservation throughout this time, along with their upcoming documentary which discusses these topics. We feel that this event would be beneficial to the JHU community at large by creating a space for those struggling with the results of this year’s election, particularly queer and trans students and students who are survivors of sexual assault and gender-based violence. Additionally, this event will bring in a speaker who has a unique, firsthand perspective on these issues, and would be able to highlight the importance of giving yourself grace and taking care of yourself in such challenging times, but also maintaining the importance of activism, especially through art forms.
