9/29 - Meeting with Charles

Tab 1

  1. RSOs and websites
    1. "Hey, I'm c urious abuo thte domain of your website — how did you get the subdomain "XXXX" for jhu.edu? If someone specific worked on your website and handled that, could you refer me to them?"
    2. Response
      1. "Hi! If you are hopkins student you should be able to do this through the LEED office!" "It should be available through the portal but I would suggest contacting them so you have no issues with it."
  2. SGA website
    1. Current requires updates from students; slow, unreliable
      1. When I was looking to be a representative, finding documents like Constitution, Bylaws, etc was seemingly impossible
    2. News-Letter: "Hopkins, who really writes your history?"
      1. "Only half of the current undergraduates were present for the 2024–25 Student Government Association’s open letter to President Ronald J. Daniels and administrators, which called for a 5% tuition reduction due to student challenges from ongoing construction. The News-Letter is the only media source that has covered this resolution."
      2. "However, internal University administrative records remain inaccessible until 25 years after their creation, including the “work product” of any administrative office or committee under the University."
      3. "The News-Letter, on the other hand, has served as an active forum and facilitator of the accessibility movement."
    3. National Call to Action
      1. Free expression
      2. Intellectual pluralism
      3. Inasmuch, though still supporting
        1. Fairness/transparency
        2. Academic Standards
    4. Being a leader amongst other top 10 universities
      1. Other universities' SGA sites struggle with being up-to-date, but all are more user-friendly than what Hopkins has through HopkinsGroups
    5. My Website
      1. Self-sufficient:
        1. As organizational materials and records are populated into the methods of record-keeping by Secretary and Vice President, automatically visible in one click
        2. Updates to constitution/bylaws are reflected within a day
          1. It is obvious and cited what each position in SGA does; every claim has a source
          2. Students are unable to be confused (as I was) by old and outdated pages on HopkinsGroups SGA site
      2. Modern
        1. Visually, the website has clear and readable fonts, as well as intuitive and uncomplicated controls
        2. Represents the SGA well, especially to outsiders looking at Hopkins, whether prospective students or investors
      3. Freedom of Speech
        1. My website also has anonymous forums with automatic moderation systems
      4. Transparency
        1. Not only are almost all SGA documents put in the face of those who browse the site (unlike the current site, where "what does SGA even do?" is an ineluctable question)
        2. All moderation of forums is public, as well as the code for the site is open-source
          1. Clear account of credibility, as everyone can see what is happening behind teh scenes; no obfuscation is possible
          2. Invites other schools to follow our lead, and establishes Hopkins as the SGA to modernize/revolutionize record-keeping as well as the activity of student governments at secondary education in the United States
