A BILL FUNDING THE ANNUAL AFRICAN FASHION SHOW

INTRODUCED BY: SENATOR Brandon Benjamin OF THE JUNIOR CLASS AND CONSIDERED THIS 14TH DAY OF NOVEMBER IN THE YEAR 2023

Be it enacted by the Senate of the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University assembled that:

SECTION 1. TITLE. This Act may be referred to as the “African Fashion Show Funding Act”

SECTION 2. DEFINITIONS. JHU STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION — SGA-B.22-23.20 — ASA FASHION SHOW FUNDING 2

(a) SGA — The term “SGA” shall refer to the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University.

(b) JHU, Hopkins — The terms “JHU” and “Hopkins” shall refer to Johns Hopkins University. (c) ASA – The term “ASA” shall refer to the African Students Association of the Johns Hopkins University.

SECTION 3. FINDINGS AND PURPOSES. (a) FINDINGS

  1. The African Fashion Show is hosted by ASA annually and promotes diversity & inclusion of the African Diaspora through an event showcasing their clothing, music, and food to the student body and the Baltimore community.
  2. The event will be held December 10th, 2023 in the Glass Pavilion and starts at 6:30 pm
  3. Money raised from the ticket sales are traditionally donated to an African-based charity, this year being the United to Beat Malaria Fund.
  4. The event would also promote clothing from local Baltimore African clothing designers

(b) PURPOSES

a. To promote cultural events on campus

b. To promote and continue school-wide traditions

c. To raise money for a nonprofit organization

SECTION 4. PROCEDURE AND FUNDING OF ITEM.

a. Money fundraised will go to united to beat Malaria Fund

SECTION 5. SEVERABILITY.

JHU STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION — SGA-B.22-23.20 — ASA FASHION SHOW FUNDING 3

Should any provision of this Act, an amendment made by this Act, or the application of such provision or amendment to any person or circumstance be held to be unconstitutional, the remainder of this Act, the amendments made by this Act, and the application of such provision or amendment to any person or circumstances shall not be affected thereby.

THE BILL HEREBY PASSES BY A VOTE OF TO WITH ABSTENTIONS.

UPON PASSAGE, WE HAVE HEREUNTO SET OUR HANDS AND CAUSED THE SEAL OF THE SENATE TO BE AFFIXED TO THIS BILL INDICATING THE SENATE’S ASSENT AND THUS OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED THE BILL’S ADOPTION AS LAW.
