Major Fair Presentation From Timothy Huang and Resham Talwar
Background Currently: Meet the Majors is a Pre-Freshman, online seminar hosted by Admissions Additionally, Welcome to the Major is more of a transitional academic experience and not an exploratory experience for students Is not representative of JHU academics Does not provide a full experience for incoming students
Vision The main goal for this meet the majors is to bring a school-wide “Major Fair”, similar to SIF. Pilot Event for Academic Exploration (more to be added if goes well!) Faculty, students invited to share experience about major: Faculty are the main points of contact, with students explaining their own personal experiences Group KSAS majors by fields, WSE by departments
Major Fair: February 16th, 1-5pm
What We’ve Done Reached out to both vice deans of KSAS, WSE to get approval They love the idea! Willing to table and support Talked to LDL about financial, structural support Maintained constant communication to make this event work Working on department communication Setting budget and tabling needs Deciding between incentives
What we need input from y’all: Funding opportunities from SGA? How can SGA be more proactive about this event/help out more? Other ideas you want to input in this event
Ideas Establishing the “Meet the Majors” Event/Major Fair to the beginning of Spring Semester (January/February)
Bring faculty, alumni, and/or current students to talk about their majors, showcase academic achievements, and inform about resources/career paths with the major
Ideas Invite major-specific administrative organizations such as the Public Health Studies office to share their resources Have global education offices, other organizations within Hopkins show up like other major events (OneHop, GEO, etc)
Inviting student-ran academic organizations such as AlCHE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers) to showcase student initiatives within the major
What we talked about with Dean Rowe/Mr. Lorts Plan for Pilot Event in February Group each major into ‘department centers’ (Romance Languages) Incentivize Free Stuff: give from LDL resources, majors Use structure of SIF/Welcome to the Majors: grab the same people to staff One set day, like SIF for this event at the Glass Pav/Great Hall
Next Steps and Action Items after this meeting Figure out tabling costs for the Glass Pav Find out which departments we can group together under one "central booth" Figure which majors would have representatives Also other departments we need to contact like GEO Figure ways to reach out to students, faculty within the departments Will need both deans of each school to facilitate this, we can help door-to-door
Potential Collaborators for the future to make this event bigger and better! Orientation and First Year Experience: They host Departmental Open houses during orientation week Reach out to Undergraduate Admissions Office: They host Meet the majors to prospective freshmen Reach out to HOUR: Students can present their research work Reach out to Arrive and Thrive, First Year Seminar Classes: To gain an understanding of student needs and partner with them in a better way Reach out to KSAS and WSE Advising offices Connect with other club organizations/administration offices to participate in event
