Honor and Professional Society Senator Author: Steven Doctorman, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering senior, sdoctor1@jhu.edu. Position Overview: The Honor and Professional Society Senator is a position designed to facilitate communication between these societies and the student government. The senator should represent the preferences and beliefs of these societies when discussing bills and policies that may affect them and generally represent the community of JHU members for less relevant bills. Goals for Next Year: The goals for next year ought to be making a more concerted effort to get in contact with the honor and professional societies on campus, as much of my work was stymied by difficulties getting a list of the current organizations and their respective contact information. I would recommend making an early effort, even before the fall semester starts, to get this list from LEED and get in contact with the societies, as it becomes more difficult on both ends to communicate once the semester starts. Future work could also include representing societies to partner with SGA for events for the members. Lessons Learned: Many of the lessons I learned were more broadly about SGA and less specific to this senator position. SGA requires a willingness to speak up and connect with relevant parties to get work done; it also needs the ability to communicate with both students and professionals. I would recommend familiarizing yourself with the rules that govern GBMs, so that you can best engage with all material presented during them. Useful Contacts: Previous members of SGA, such as members of the executive board, will be able to best connect you with relevant parties in LEED or the administration.
