Judiciary Transition Document Chief Justice Role: The role of the chief justice is to organize weekly or bi-weekly judiciary meetings, take meeting notes, attend all weekly SGA GBMs, act as a liaison between SGA and the Judiciary, communicate important rulings to SGA, organize casework, spread awareness about the judiciary, work with the CSE to organize election procedures and ensure a smooth process, interview and assess CSE candidates, and carefully review and understand the rules of the Judiciary, SGA constitution, and SGA bylaws Justice Role: The role of a justice in the judiciary is to attend weekly or bi-weekly judiciary meetings, attend 1 SGA GBM per month, review and interpret casework, assist the chief justice with interviewing and assessing CSE candidates, carefully review and understand the rules of the Judiciary, SGA constitution, and SGA bylaws, and assist in any Judiciary initiatives
Notable Work and Upcoming Goals: The Judiciary has grown a lot this year in a more expansive role and continues to be a work in progress. This year, the judiciary was able to manage the CSE, help create election timelines, fill vacancies, and help ensure a smooth election process. In addition, we spent a lot of time editing and reworking the rules of the judiciary, which we will continue to perfect. The judiciary also handled and made a ruling on an election-related case. Finally, in an effort to be more transparent, the Chief Justice has attended all SGA meetings since his entrance into that position, and judges have been coming on a schedule to attend 1 GBM per semester. The Judiciary will continue to come to GBMs, try to spread more awareness about its existence through working with other subcommittees of SGA, and work to make the process to file an appeal to the judiciary much easier.
Lessons Learned: Becoming a more transparent and communicative body, especially when making rulings, is something we will continue to work on. Furthermore, continuing to revise the rules of the judiciary and making them more clear is also something to work on. Finally, raising more awareness about the judiciary is something we need to work harder on.
