112th Senate Committee on Civic Engagement

Date: 7 February 2024 Time: 6:00pm-6:20pm Location: CSC, Meeting Room

ATTENDANCE: Present: Chair Angela Xiong, Lucy Landry, Willow Goode (CSC Civic Life Specialist) Excused absences: Priya Agrawal Unexcused absences: Sumire Sumi, Yonatanne Desta, Cynthia Hidalgo-Sanchez, Ethan Edelstein

AGENDA:

  • Chair Xiong: CE’s biggest focus for this semester is working on hosting the Democracy Day in the Spring with SNF Angora
    • No updates from their team yet, but Chair will follow-up with them
    • Chair provided a re-cap of our ideas for the conference
      • Hopefully will be inside the new SNF Angora
      • More events throughout the day
        • Ex. Different ways students can be civically engaged, how to run for office, and how to be an advocate
        • Want to focus on stressing the importance of getting out and voting
  • Willow Goode: CSC can help and get Hopkins students more involved; Goode asked the Chair to let her know what SNF Angora says about Democracy Day follow-up
    • CSC will be having a HopTalk series - a dialogue series to create spaces where students can practice constructive dialogue skills
      • Date: Weds., Feb. 12, 6-8pm. Location: Great Hall
        • Topics on affirmative action; will work as an informal space where students can discuss how they are feeling about it
        • Will be an open conversation to work on constructive dialogue skills
          • Ex. Listening, letting go of “winning” an argument, sharing stories
        • Goode asked for this to be shared on the official SGA Instagram; the flyer already has the SGA logo
          • Chair: Will reach out to Buse/Tim about posting it
    • CSC is Looking forward to promoting SGA Elections
    • CSC is also Planning a workshop on how to call your representative
      • This is in the early stages of planning
      • Will focus on how to call, how to write to a representative
        • CSC wants to work with the Writing Center on this
  • Chair: Received an email in October, a student looking to sit in our our committees and CSC meetings
    • Chair will follow-up on this, and will update Goode
