Senate of the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University
{ S. Bill. 114.10.13.26-1 }
A Bill to Amend The Bylaws of the Senate
Selection of the SGA Representative to the CSAC
Introduced by: Paul Woo Sponsored by: Shreemann Patel and Jackson Morris Presented for First Reading this 13th day of October in the year 2026
SECTION 1. TITLE. This Act may be referred to as the CSAC Representative Bill
SECTION 2. DEFINITIONS.
- SGA — The term “SGA” shall refer to the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University.
- JHU, Hopkins - The terms “JHU” and “Hopkins” shall refer to the Johns Hopkins University.
- CSAC shall refer to the Cross-Institutional Student Advisory Committee
SECTION 3. FINDINGS AND PURPOSES.
- The CSAC assembles representatives from the different schools, at both graduate and undergraduate levels, and is meant to function as a focus group for the students to communicate with administration (the VP for Student Affairs).
- The SGA is supposed to represent the undergraduates of Homewood, but the position is currently vacant on the CSAC’s website (senator Veda may be the representative?), and neither the constitution, bylaws, nor rules mention the process for selecting a representative.
- Homewood undergraduates therefore lack representation on this committee; the position of CSAC representative ought to be established in the bylaws to ensure that it is filled systematically.
- The bylaws charge the vice president with “[fostering] communication with the governing bodies of other divisions of the University (e.g., GRO, CSAC, JHUC).”
- Four options exist:
- The POTS announces and explains the duties of the position, senators should announce their candidacy to be the CSAC representative, and the senate will vote to elect the CSAC representative.
- A member of the executive (President, VP, POTS, or another) is mandated to be the CSAC representative ex officio. This is seemingly what the current bylaws suggest.
- If the senate elects for this route, an exemption ought to be made for this year, but in future years it should be advertised as part of the duties of that executive member.
- The executive can select one of their own members, or designate a senator who they feel collaborates and aligns with their vision.
- Any member of SGA can announce their candidacy and the senate will vote to elect the CSAC representative.
