Senate of the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University

{S. Bill. 25-26 }

A Bill to Fund Phi Delta Theta’s Crab Fest

Introduced By: Senator Hidrowoh

Sponsored By: Senator Basireddy and Senator Flores

Be it enacted by the Senate of the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University assembled that:

SECTION 1. TITLE. This Act may be referred to as the “Phi Delta Theta’s Crab Fest”

SECTION 2. DEFINITIONS.

  1. SGA — The term “SGA” shall refer to the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University.
  2. JHU, Hopkins - The terms “JHU” and “Hopkins” shall refer to the Johns Hopkins University.
  3. ALS - The term “ALS” shall refer to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease.

SECTION 3. FINDINGS AND PURPOSES.

  1. FINDINGS & PURPOSES
    1. The purpose of this event is for Phi Delta Theta to provide an all-you-can-eat crab-eating event to the Johns Hopkins community, including students, young alumni, faculty, and parents and family for its third consecutive year.
    2. This is to raise money for philanthropy, with all proceeds directed to both the Packard Center, the premier ALS research institute in the world that’s centered at Johns Hopkins, as well as the Live Like Lou Foundation, an organization that is closely partnered with the national Phi Delta Theta fraternity to support ALS patients, families, and communities, and further promote the development of research of a cure in the future.
    3. The funding of this event will help reduce the cost of attendance from a typical $60 all-you-can-eat to a price range of around $25.
    4. The projected attendance of this event will be between 600 and 650 people from various groups, including students, young alumni, faculty, parents, and families.
    5. Sales for this event last year reached 483 attendees (a substantial increase from the inaugural year which had 339 attendees); and together with the 15 donations attendants made we were able to donate $10,000 to the Live Like Lou Foundation. With the intention of establishing ourselves as the flagship event of Family Weekend, we need the help of SGA for us to be able to procure more food in order to be able expand to a larger audience.
    6. We are actively working with the Office of Family Engagement to not only expand the event, but to improve its quality through establishing a sense of professionalism with various initiatives.

SECTION 4. FUNDING OF ITEMS

Crabs

According the numbers given to us by Curt Engle based on his professional experience, a bushel of crabs (approximately 85 crabs) feeds 12 people in a buffet. Using this rate of 7 crabs per person and our upperbound of projected attendees (650ppl), we would incur a cost of $6,625 for 53 bushels. That being said, we recognize that this is a very high price to be able to cover in full which is why we ask if SGA could cover half the cost and provide us with $3,250. That money would be absolutely critical for our ability to procure the crabs and without your support, we would be unable to run the event.Vendor: Curt Engle, Harbour House Crabs. curt@ilovecrabs.com, (888) 458-8272 ext. 1.https://www.ilovecrabs.com/hard-shell-crabs-large.html

  1. The total amount would be $3,250 for 26 bushels of 85 crabs each.

SECTION 5 . SEVERABILITY. Should any provision of this Act, an amendment made by this Act, or the application of such provision or amendment to any person or circumstance be held to be unconstitutional or , the remainder of this Act, the amendments made by this Act, and the application of such provision or amendment to any person or circumstances shall not be affected thereby.

Upon passage, we have hereunto set our hands and caused the seal of the Senate to be affixed to this bill indicating the Senate’s assent and thus officially designated the bill’s adoption as law.
