A Bill Funding the Dunbar Baldwin Hughes Theater Company 30th ANNIVERSARY GALA

Be it enacted by the Senate of the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University assembled that:

SECTION 1. TITLE.

This Act may be referred to as the “Dunbar Baldwin Hughes 30th Anniversary Gala Funding bill”

SECTION 2. DEFINITIONS. a. SGA — The term “SGA” shall refer to the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University. b. JHU, Hopkins — The terms “JHU” and “Hopkins” shall refer to Johns Hopkins University. c. DBH – The term “DBH” shall refer to the Dunbar Baldwin Hughes Theater Company.

SECTION 3. FINDINGS AND PURPOSES

  1. Findings
    1. DBH plans to have a 30th-anniversary gala on October 14th,2023 at the Great Hall in Levering.
    2. The event grant placed through to the finance committee was rejected under the false assumption that this event would serve as a formal (which cannot be funded under SAC guidelines) however, subsequent discussion and collaboration with the organization's elected board found this to not be the case.
    3. This event would serve as a dramatic performance and musical open to the greater student body also featuring a candlelit dinner and buffet for all attendees

b. PURPOSES

  1. To commemorate a huge milestone in the storied history of DBH as both a creative outlet and safe space for BIPOC to celebrate and embrace their cultures, heritages, and identities through theater
  2. To celebrate past DBH alumni, current CBH company members, and the greater JHU/Baltimore Community that have poured in support to the organization for the past 30 years
  3. To raise money for the WombWork Productions, a performing arts company based in baltimore
  4. To allow the hardworking and talented members of DBH to put their gifts and passions on display for the entire student body to see through a multitude of performances such as The Wiz, For Colored Girls, Fences, Ragtime, and more!

SECTION 5. SEVERABILITY.

Should any provision of this Act, an amendment made by this Act, or the application of such provision or amendment to any person or circumstance be held to be unconstitutional, the remainder of this Act, the amendments made by this Act, and the application of such provision or amendment to any person or circumstances shall not be affected thereby.

The Bill hereby PASSES/FAILS by a vote of X to X with X abstentions.

Upon passage, we have hereunto set our hands and caused the seal of the Senate to be affixed to this bill indicating the Senate’s assent and thus officially designated the bill’s adoption as law.
