Whereas this is an internal resolution that pertains to the Student Government Association (SGA) unto itself, rather than to the University at-large; and
Whereas the Student Government Association (SGA) members (Juniors and Seniors) graduating this year are Student Body President Ryan Chou, Student Body Treasurer Jenny Chen, Chair of Programming Shalala Leny, Senior Class President Rachel Huang, Committee of Student Elections Chair Nubaira Milki, Senior Class Senator Mufasa Cruz Moreno, … using the other doc what doc are we using?
Whereas Student Body Treasurer Jenny Chen has made remarkable contributions to SGA and the university. She has co-chaired the Finance Committee and served as a member of the Student Services, Student Organizations and Academic Affairs Committees and has organized successful sophomore, junior, and senior class events. She has helped review 300+ allocations, and distributed 320k in funds. Through her advocacy for increased PILOT funding and better student-faculty and reporting, she has shown her dedication to improving the student experience and amplifying student voices on campus. She is graduating as Economics and International Studies double major.
Whereas Senior Class President Rachel Huang joined SGA freshman year through CMC, she has since made large contributions to her class as a Sophomore and Junior Class senator. She has hosted events for her class and has been the Chair of Health, Safety, and Sustainability for two years and a member of Academic Affairs for two years and a member of the Finance Committee for one year. She convinced administration to consider bringing fall break back (it’s back), created and distributed a mental health day survey with 1,109 responses, introduced the idea of providing reusable bags and reusable to-go boxes in dining halls, promoted the Sustainability Plan, collaborated on the Sustainability Coalition, served as the only student on the Sustainability Leadership Council Steering Committee, formed an unofficial international student caucus to discuss issues specific to international students, proposed the Thanksgiving Break Resolution (no assignments before and during Thanksgiving Break), suggested to the Recreation Center to install glass stickers in light of seeing dead birds outside the building, advocated in light of the commencement speaker, and worked with over 8 departments and student organizations in HSS.
Whereas Student Body Chair of Programming Shalala Leny joined SGA this year, and served on Health Safety and Sustainability, Finance and CSO, and has done an amazing job at representing Hispanic/Latinx students, passing the COPA America funding bill, as well as tabling with Homewood recycling and supporting the student body. She will be graduating with Neuroscience and Mathematics majors.
Whereas CSE Nubaira Milki joined SGA this year as well, and served on the Health Safety and Sustainability and Finance committees. She has sponsored multiple event funding bills such as Wellbeing Fair and MEAT the future, as well as other legislation during her time. She will be graduating with a Neuroscience Major.
Whereas Senior Class Senator Ayisat Adegbindin started on SGA this year and has been a diligent member; serving on CSO and the IA committee; and has continued to represent the student body through her work, such as presenting the MELA event funding bill. She will be graduating as a Cognitive Science major; and
Whereas Senior Class Senator Nico Barrera, an Economics major, has dedicated 3 months of his time and skills to SGA. He has served on the Finance Committee, ensuring that funds are allocated effectively and responsibly. He has assisted the Senior Council in organizing both the Senior Formal and Senior Graduation Week Activities, contributing to the successful execution of these events, and has sponsored the Fiji Islander Bill, advocating for the interests and needs of his fellow students.
Whereas Senior Class Senator Noor Al-Saloum just joined SGA 3 months ago and served on the Committee on Student Organizations and Committee on Internal Affairs, ensuring that student life runs smoothly. She has assisted planning the Senior Formal and Senior Graduation Week Activities, helped with the Climate Change survey meeting, and is graduating with a major in Public Health, and;
Whereas Student Body President Breanna Soldatelli has served on SGA for four years, first as the Freshman Class President, then as Secretary, Vice President, and finally Student Body President. She has prioritized a fun, welcoming, and healthy environment in the organization and has led SGA and fought for students through challenging times from the COVID-19 pandemic to the transition of SGA’s structure during her Student Body Presidency. She formed the Hispanic/Latinx Caucus to ensure diversity and representation in SGA and has been invaluable in connecting students to SGA and the JHU Community. We appreciate her dedication to this organization, and all the time she has put in over the years on behalf of the student body and senate. She will be graduating as a Neuroscience and History of Medicine, Science, and Technology major.
Whereas the Senior Class has done amazing work this year, and we will miss them. Good luck in all your future endeavors, and we wish you luck!
Therefore, Be It Resolved that the Student Government Association thanks its graduating seniors for their unwavering devotion to the improvement of this University, the ingenuity they used over the past four years to address the challenges they faced, the example of leadership that they have set for student leaders for years to come, and the legacy that they leave across not only our campus but the city of Baltimore.
Be It Further Resolved that this resolution be held in the SGA archives in perpetuity.
The Resolution hereby PASSES by a vote of XX to XX with XX abstentions.
Upon adoption, we have hereunto set our hands and caused the seal of the Senate to be affixed to this resolution indicating the senate’s assent and thus officially designating the resolution’s adoption as the position and is will of the Senate and the Student Body of The Johns Hopkins University.
