Health Promotion and Well-being X HSS Meeting Date: 2/29/24 Time: 4:00PM-5:00PM Location: Zoom Admin Attendees: Jacki Stone and Caress Roach Student Attendees: Rachel, Srigouri, Danial, Raven

Questions:

  1. Is there a possibility of establishing a once a semester “Wellness Day”?
    1. No classes, no assignments due, kind of like a field day, filled with fun activities that help teach mindfulness and promote well-being. Can help with building community with Hopkins.
    2. Caress supports “Wellness Day” to relieve stress but wonders about feasibility. Campus-wide event (no assignment/classes). Shouldn’t be on break -- maybe during orientation/before classes start?
    3. Jacki is thinking about the past events with HSS. What is stopping students from studying more on this day? How can we make it different? Students want to feel part of the community/connected to their peers. This day shouldn’t be a study day - time it to align with midterm season.
    4. Alternative: No assignment/exam on the day and if we time it earlier, we can try to have it happen. It can’t be mandatory so it should be a day for people who are invested in their wellbeing -- group meditation with multiple sessions (get a reusable cup/cutlery set). Jacki recommends doing it earlier in the semester so people will go -> probably for the fall because weather is more dependable (end of September).
    5. Student recommendations are more powerful than staff. Try to collab w/ GRO. For the future, it is not feasible for this academic year.
      1. Pass a resolution, with large number of backers, to convince faculty to cancel exams on “wellness days”
      2. Health fest with a bunch of events in the quad
      3. E.g. UNC Chapel Hill
  2. If that is not a possibility, could there be a “Mental Health” guarantee each student gets a semester.
    1. Ex: If students are feeling overwhelmed and they don’t feel able to come to class one day or cannot submit an assignment, they get a “Mental Health” extension and excused absences for the entire day
    2. Maybe once or twice a semester?
  3. Would you consider establishing a crash course on mental health services either during orientation or in First Year Seminars?
    1. Orientation: only need to do once, but students are already overloaded with information during that week
    2. FYS: need to do multiple times but increased chance students pay attention and can ask questions
  4. Out of curiosity, are there any plans for a presence of health promotion and well-being inside of the new student center?
    1. Drop-in counselors? ASK AMANI/DR. HOWES
    2. A space for programming events, such as the sleep event to happen. More central location, so maybe more student engagement?
  5. What type of training is currently given to faculty to help identify students that may be suffering with mental health issues or how they should approach navigating “consequences” of late-work etc, due to mental health crises. ASK AMANI/DR. HOWES
  6. Would it be possible to work with academic departments/affairs to get mental health resources/the health and wellbeing page on canvas?
    1. Jessie Martin
    2. Kimberly Bassett Zing
  7. More out-door seating/spaces to study. Right now just some tables outside of Brody and garland hall, but would be nice to have more official outdoor areas. Not sure if this is really their area
  8. How much student engagement are the events Health Promotion & Well-being currently getting?
  9. Alumni workshop collaborations. Many students feel stressed and like they can’t take time for themselves because they are too focused on the future and are scared of the consequences of missing an assignment/getting a C on an exam. I think hearing from alumni that everything will be alright in the end can be a powerful tool to begin changing that mindset.
  10. Collaborations with Pre-profesisonal advising to include a mental health seminar requirement or component of Pre-health 101 or something?
    1. Mental Health workshop invite Deans and Counselors?
    2. QPR training
  11. Pass/Fail classes first semester?
  12. SGA is meeting with the Board of Trustees. Is there something that you think is helpful for the Board to know about increasing access to mental and physical wellbeing?
  13. What is your office’s 6 month, and 1 year goal for health wellbeing and promotion? What has been your office’s greatest accomplishment for year 23-24?
