Act to Fund Fast With JHUMA Event

SECTION 1. TITLE. This Act may be referred to as the “Fast With JHUMA”

SECTION 2. DEFINITIONS.

  1. SGA — The term “SGA” shall refer to the Student Government Association of The Johns Hopkins University.
  2. JHU, Hopkins - The terms “JHU” and “Hopkins” shall refer to the Johns Hopkins University.
  3. JHUMA- The term “JHUMA” shall refer to Johns Hopkins University Muslim Association

SECTION 3. FINDINGS AND PURPOSES. FINDINGS & PURPOSES:

  1. The purpose of this event is for the Johns Hopkins University Muslim Association (JHUMA) to host a Ramadan interfaith iftar (dinner). This event is designed to create a welcoming environment midsemester for students and staff to take on the experience of a Muslim student on a college campus by providing a platform for social interaction and community integration across various academic schools. Community members are invited to fast for the day, then have dinner at sunset with JHUMA members
  2. This event aims to foster mentorship, enhance networking opportunities, and promote dialogue among a diverse array of students, celebrating cultural richness while serving the broader Johns Hopkins community. It offers a welcoming environment that encourages participation from all students, facilitating connections across both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  3. By supporting this event, the funding will allow for a reduction in the cost of attendance, making it more accessible for students, which in turn will likely increase participation. This financial support is crucial to ensure that the event remains an inclusive and integral part of the Johns Hopkins community’s annual activities.
  4. The projected attendance for this event is 250 students, faculty, and administrators from various Johns Hopkins schools, including the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Carey Business School, School of Education, Whiting School of Engineering, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Bloomberg School of Public Health
  5. The event is jointly funded, with Johns Hopkins Administration contributing all food costs. This collaborative funding arrangement underscores the commitment of both JHUMA and Hopkins Administration to making the Ramadan event a successful, widely accessible event that enhances student life and fosters community bonds across Johns Hopkins University.

SECTION 5. SEVERABILITY. Should any provision of this Act, an amendment made by this Act, or the application of such provision or amendment to any person or circumstance be held to be unconstitutional or, the remainder of this Act, the amendments made by this Act, and the application of such provision or amendment to any person or circumstances shall not be affected thereby.

The Bill hereby Passes by a vote of x to 0 with 0 abstentions.

Upon passage, we have hereunto set our hands and caused the seal of the Senate to be affixed to this bill indicating the Senate’s assent and thus officially designated the bill’s adoption as law.
